CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Reklin skidded to a stop and caught Kronkor as he fell. He was heavier than expected, and both went down hard. Emony managed to draw a plasma pistol before another water spike ripped through her torso. Since she was lighter and smaller, it actually lifted her off the ground and dragged her toward the canyon. Alina swung her hammer and the icy spike shattered, causing Emony to fall at the edge. Alina caught her by the horn and dragged her back.

“Call for aid,” Reklin barked to Kronkor, who fumbled to activate his holoview.

Reklin summoned his energy blade, the molecules pouring from his fingers into his hand and forming the hilt. He activated the weapon and slashed as a water tendril came for him. The icy spike at the end shattered, but more came. Alina dragged Emony to Reklin and braced on the opposite side, the two slashing at the incoming strikes.

The icy spikes came from all sides and all heights. One snaked around Alina and aimed for the back of her skull, but Reklin spotted it and cut it down. Another got past Reklin’s guard and sliced a line along his leg. The water whips lashed at them both, the barbs of ice at the end seeking to get past his guard. But he spun his blade, cutting through the assault. Alina had a seracrete dagger in one hand and a pistol in the other. The flurry of blows increased in intensity—and then they retreated into darkness.

Breathing heavy in the evening humidity, Reklin scanned the shadows above the canyon, but the attacker had retreated below the lip. A tactical withdrawal. He’d been unable to get past Reklin and Alina, so he’d disengaged from combat. He would come at them from another angle.

“He’s trained,” Reklin hissed. “Not just with his ability, but in military tactics.”

“He must have two augmentations,” she called. “Heat and water. It’s the only way he could freeze the ends.”

“Maintain eyes up,” Reklin said. “Let’s get them away from the river.”

He dropped and grabbed the unconscious Emony’s wrist. With his other hand, he grabbed Konkor’s shoulder spike. With a grunt of effort, he got them moving and dragged them away from the bridge while Alina covered their retreat. Emony’s head lolled, while Kronkor’s face was a mask of pain.

“I’m sorry we couldn’t meet under better circumstances,” Reklin said.

“I know who you are,” he rasped. “What I don’t know is how a human could do what he just did.”

“He’s an augment,” Reklin said. “And it seems he’s been sent to kill you.”

“He’s still just a human.”

“That’s exactly what the people who sent him expect you to think.”

Kronkor scowled but didn’t argue. Reklin had hoped to drag them back to the nearest clan home, but it was half a mile away, and a flicker in the shadows drew him up short. If the assassin really was trained, he would know Reklin would try to retreat away from water. Not liking their options, he pulled them into a small circle of boulders and trees.
